The Bangladesh Journal of Fisheries Research (BJFR) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal dedicated to advancing research and knowledge in fisheries science, aquatic ecology, marine biology, aquaculture systems, limnology, and related interdisciplinary fields. It serves as an academic platform for researchers, scientists, policymakers, and professionals engaged in the study and sustainable management of aquatic resources. The journal is published under the authority of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), an autonomous government research organization of the Government of Bangladesh. BJFR reflects the institutional mission of BFRI, which is to generate, validate, and disseminate scientific knowledge for the sustainable development of fisheries resources, food security, and environmental conservation. Since its inception, BJFR has maintained a strong commitment to publishing high-quality original research articles, review papers, short communications, and technical notes. The journal aims to contribute both to national development priorities and to the global body of scientific knowledge in aquatic sciences.
The primary mission of BJFR is to provide a scientific platform for disseminating fisheries-related research findings. Fisheries science is inherently multidisciplinary, involving biological, ecological, technological, and socio-economic dimensions. BJFR recognizes this complexity and encourages submissions that integrate multiple fields of study. The journal aims to promote research that supports sustainable fisheries management, aquaculture innovation, aquatic biodiversity conservation, and climate-resilient aquatic systems. It also encourages applied research that can be translated into practical solutions for fisheries development in Bangladesh and similar ecological regions. Another key objective of BJFR is to support young researchers and established scientists by providing a credible, peer-reviewed outlet for publishing their work. Through rigorous editorial standards and transparent peer review, the journal ensures scientific integrity and academic quality.
The Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) is an autonomous national research institution established in 1984 and operational since 1986. It functions under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh. The institute plays a central role in conducting fisheries research and providing scientific support for national fisheries development policies. The current Director General of BFRI is Dr. Anuradha Bhadra, who oversees the strategic direction, research programs, and administrative operations of the institute. Under his leadership, BFRI continues to strengthen its research capacity and national and international collaborations.
BFRI operates a network of specialized research stations designed to cover the diverse aquatic ecosystems of Bangladesh. These stations form the scientific backbone of fisheries research in the country. The Riverine Station in Chandpur focuses on river ecology, fish migration, and riverine fisheries systems. The Freshwater Station in Mymensingh specializes in pond aquaculture, freshwater fish breeding, and inland fisheries management. The Brackishwater Station in Khulna conducts research on coastal aquaculture systems, shrimp farming, and estuarine ecosystems. The Marine Fisheries and Technological Station in Cox’s Bazar is dedicated to marine fisheries research, oceanographic studies, and offshore resource assessment. In addition, the institute maintains smaller research stations in Rangamati and Santahar, which focus on reservoir fisheries and floodplain ecosystems respectively. Each station is led by a Chief Scientific Officer responsible for coordinating research activities and ensuring scientific output.
BFRI has received significant recognition for its contributions to scientific research in Bangladesh. One of its notable honors includes the Ekushey Padak awarded in 2020 for outstanding contributions to research. This recognition reflects the institute’s long-standing commitment to scientific excellence and national development.
The Bangladesh Journal of Fisheries Research was established in the year 1997 as part of BFRI’s initiative to create a formal platform for scientific publication in fisheries and aquatic sciences. Before its establishment, fisheries research outputs in Bangladesh were often dispersed across different institutional reports and international journals. BJFR was created to consolidate national research efforts and provide a dedicated outlet for fisheries-related scientific communication. In its early years, the journal primarily published research conducted within BFRI, although it gradually expanded to include contributions from external researchers and international collaborators. Initially, BJFR operated as a traditional print journal. Manuscripts were submitted in physical form, reviewed manually, and published in printed issues distributed to libraries, academic institutions, and research organizations. Despite technological limitations, the journal maintained strict peer-review standards and editorial oversight. During this phase, BJFR played a significant role in documenting fisheries research in Bangladesh at a time when digital publication systems were not widely available. It contributed to the formalization of fisheries science as a recognized academic discipline in the country.
With the global shift toward digital academic communication, BJFR gradually modernized its publication system. The introduction of online manuscript submission, digital peer review, and electronic publication significantly improved efficiency and accessibility. A major milestone was achieved in June 2026 when BJFR began publishing manuscripts fully online. This transition marked a significant transformation in the journal’s operational model, enabling global accessibility, faster publication timelines, and integration with indexing and citation systems. The digital transformation reflects BJFR’s commitment to aligning with international publishing standards and expanding its global reach.
